Saturday's New York Times crossword puzzle solved: January 2, 2021

My time: 11:56, eight minutes faster than average.  That's better!

Sablefish is not only known as BLACK COD, but also candlefish, snowfish, butterfish, and blue cod.  Fish, like birds, tend to have a huge variety of names due to their ability to travel to many parts of the world.

I didn't know the USB flash drive was invented in ISR.  M-Systems, an Israeli company, were granted a US patent on November 14, 2000.  However, other companies in other countries have disputed their primacy.

We all know ORION'S Belt, but I was mildly surprised to see that there's an asterism called ORION'S Sword as well.  It comprises the Orion Nebula.

Being unfathomably old, I have never heard of actress and YouTube star LIZA Koshy.

"He hath but a little WEE face" is said by Peter Simple to Mistress Quickly in Act I, scene IV of "Merry Wives of Windsor."  He is describing his master, Slender, a suitor for Anne Page's hand.

"Caribbean locale across the water from Morro Castle" would have been a lot easier if I had had any idea what Morro Castle is.  It's a 16th-century fortress guarding the entrance to Havana Bay, and so is across from OLD HAVANA.

More geography: DAKAR, the capital of Senegal, is on the Cape Verde peninsula.  It's at the very tip of the triangle.

Not being a sports person, I have never heard of "MIC'D Up," an NFL game feature with in-game dialogue.

"Sea urchin in sushi" is UNI.  While colloquially referred to as the roe (eggs), uni is actually the animal's gonads (which produce the milt or roe). Uni ranges in color from rich gold to light yellow, and has a creamy consistency that some love and is off-putting to others.

Many clever clues today: "Band for an awards ceremony, maybe" is SASH.  "It has wheels and flies" is ROLLER BAG — that's a truly funny one.  "Some 'M*A*S*H' characters" is ASTERISKS.  "Artificial object in orbit?" is GLASS EYE.  "become incapable of parting?" is GO BALD.  "Promising area" is ALTAR.  "Fits in between?" is HALF SIZES.  "Back stroke?" is PAT.

Lots of terrific fill today, most noticeably E EQUALS MC SQUARED, but also MOO JUICE, AZTECS, THIRST QUENCHER, BITE SIZED, and others.  Oh, can't forget AQUAZUMBA!  Also, smart and challenging clues.  All in all, a terrific Saturday puzzle.
